Today is International Day of Education!
Here at Pionero Philanthropy, we value the importance of education as it breaks the cycle of poverty and opens up more opportunities.
Guatemala has one of the worst illiteracy and education rates in of the western hemisphere.
Luckily, there are a variety of education nonprofits across Guatemala that assist in promoting change, including Magical Classroom and Cada Niño.
We're proud to be partnering with these wonderful Member Nonprofits!
Member Nonprofit Spotlight - @womens_justice (WJI)
WJI works with rural, indigenous women and girls, and provides them with free, bilingual legal services and ensures that all women have equal access to justice.
They have created several initiatives to help clear some of the obstacles indigenous women face on a daily basis in Guatemala.
WJI does an amazing job at preparing these women to become the next leaders in their community. We couldn't be more proud to partner with them!

In an ideal world, Guatemala has a strong infrastructure, a strong government, and an abundance of economic opportunities.
In an ideal world, remittances from abroad would no longer be heavily relied on. ✨
In the meantime, whilst these structural changes gradually improve, we believe that local organizations must be empowered in order for more sustainable development and a reduction in irregular migration.
Through more intelligent, intentional, localization efforts that stem irregular migration, Guatemala will further flourish from the inside out.

Did you know that many Guatemalan families rely on remittances from their family members in the US?
Many families, especially in rural areas, do not earn enough money to make ends meet.
Remittances help to pay for groceries, healthcare, education, and household repairs.

Every year an estimated 300,000 Guatemalans illegally migrate to the US.
The economic support these migrants provide to their families in Guatemala is enormous. 📈
In 2021 almost 18% of Guatemala's GDP came from remittances sent from migrants in the US.
"Remittance" in Spanish is "remesa" and this week, we'll explain more about this trending topic!
